Data Metrics Workshop

Data Metrics Workshop

Do you have ideas for metrics or approaches to measure the use and value/impact of data repositories, knowledgebases or specific datasets in data resources?

  1. What are the long-term positive or negative consequences of having evaluation metrics for research data?
  2. Are there existing standards or methodologies for assessing research data value and reach?
  3. How might different stakeholders (data resource users, managers, or funders) use data metrics?

Share or vote on ideas before the NIH Virtual Workshop on Data Metrics on February 19, 2020, from 9 AM - 3:30 PM EST.  The workshop organizers may select ideas for panel discussions. The workshop is supported by the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy and aligns with the recommendations in the NIH Data Science Strategic Plan.

The workshop announcement, agenda and registration form can be found here: https://www.scgcorp.com/Metrics2020.

Click on the "IDEAS" tab or scroll down to see submitted ideas.  Log in to vote, or comment on a submitted idea or share your ideas, best practices, or use cases on Data Metrics for repositories, knowledgebases, and datasets.

Data Metrics Workshop

Challenge of metrics for data aggregates

Databases typically aggregate the data from many individual contributors. What should the metrics measure? Impact of the database (solvable) or of specific contributions (unsolved IMHO). And the problem is almost recursive, there are databases aggregating data from other databases, etc.

Data Metrics Workshop

Define the Problem

Perhaps the workshop will address this more clearly. The goal is to "understand impact of open data usage". This seems to be a broad (but excellent!) goal. Would it be helpful to define why this is important and the problem that needs to be addressed? Perhaps a clearer understanding of the problem could lead to some productive problem-solving work to look at the current state of things, identify potential causes of the... more »
